Letterform

2020

The typographic letterform project was based upon finding unique typography of two assigned letters through personal encounter. After compiling a collection of photographs of unique letterforms from my surroundings, I was tasked with re-creating one of each letter in a creative medium based upon inspiration from my photographs. I chose to employ acrylic that was cut to shape by a laser cut printer as the medium for my letterforms. Having no prior experience to working with a laser cut printer, I learned how to format, export and optimize my files for production. The design for both my letterforms was to repeatedly laser cut each letter out of acrylic to create 3-D letterforms by stacking the cutouts of acrylic. The cutouts were layered and attached to the front and back acrylic covers of each letterform through inserting acrylic dowels through the holes in each cutout. To push my design thinking further in the creation of my letterforms, I created a 3-D drawing feature in my ‘U’ letterform using shape and depth to mimic three dimensions. I then printed this design onto sheets of velum and inserted them between the white acrylic cutout layers of the ‘U’.

Below is the design, production, and final result of my experimental process.
