On every level of the system from farm to fork, food is political. Racism permeates our agricultural practices, our food service industries, and inevitably who has access to affordable and nutritious food. As one of the wealthiest countries in the world, it is incomprehensible that many families still have to worry about whether or not they will be able to enjoy a healthy and fulfilling meal. Unsurprisingly, food insecurity disproportionately affects those already suffering from social and economic disadvantage. In Canada, it is most prevalent among low income households, lone-parent families, those who rent rather than own their housing, and those who identify as Indigenous or black. Through our website we are proposing a digital intervention which will examine the role food justice plays in the larger fight towards social justice. We hope to raise awareness about food insecurity in Canada and provide resources on how we can begin to address this concern as systemic issue by acknowledging the role our government plays.
